Throughout history, God’s messengers, as imperfect humans, were often disappointed and discouraged when things did not go as expected, even though they were following God’s plan and holding expectations inspired by God Himself. They were tested and tried. Thankfully, by God’s grace, the faith of Miller and the biblical revivalists remained steadfast unto the end, and they overcame their disappointments.

God impressed us to come and pray and train the people again. The church promised to find more people. On the appointed night, we arrived with much hope and expectation. Announcements had been made from the front of church during the worship service. Less showed up than the first time! But we got on our knees and prayed and claimed God’s promises.

It is time for the fire of God to fall again! Not the fire that burns up wood, stone, and water, but the fire from heaven that consumes our pride, lust, self-righteousness, and disbelief. We need the fire from heaven that will burn up our bitterness towards those who have wronged us and our pride that keeps us from making things right with God and with man.

The centurion's request was not remarkable because he asked healing for someone else rather than himself, but because in making his request, he expressed a deep understanding of why God is to be obeyed. His words surprised Jesus. Here was a Roman who understood what God's own people had not learned in centuries of personal tutoring. Would God be surprised today if God’s people demonstrated this same understanding?

When I was in my early 20s I was a heavy drug user. Occasionally I would use a cocktail that included psychedelic drugs like Ecstasy and LSD mixed with inhalants such as nitrous oxide. While I was under their influence, these cocktails often resulted in my entering into a semiconscious, dream-like state. I cannot remember most of the drug-induced visions… but the ones I do remember all had spiritual themes.
