“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 18:3

Shortly after reflecting on this passage during my devotional time one morning, I learned a valuable lesson from my own child. While tidying my house one day, I decided to give my two parakeets a temporary break from their cage. As I often did, that morning I allowed them to perch on our floor-length wicker mirror. Delilah, true to her routine, climbed down to the bottom and sat gazing into the mirror, serenading herself. Samson, also following his routine, remained at the top. With his chest puffed out and singing loudly, he declared, “Hey, look at me—I’m king!”

On that specific day, I heard more than their usual cheerful singing. Just as I was finishing my tasks upstairs, a piercing scream caught my attention. My dog had come across the parakeets and seemed to think it was time for lunch! By the time I managed to get Delilah out of her perilous situation, she was in bad shape—her tail feathers and part of her back end were gone.

She had what appeared to be a fatal, gaping wound in her chest. Humanly speaking, there was no hope for this poor bird. The kids and I were all crying. Kaylie, my 7-year-old daughter, was sobbing pitifully! Between the wails of grief, my husband said that in mercy we should put the parakeet out of her misery. That’s when Kaylie piped in, “No, Daddy! God can do miracles. I know He’ll do it, Daddy. Let’s pray!” We all knelt in a circle.

“Father,” I prayed, “You said in Your Word to become as little children. I believe You meant for us to trust You as little children do. So we are going to trust You as Kaylie trusts You right now. In the name of Jesus, we ask You to heal this bird. We thank You for it now. Amen.”

We then padded a shoebox for the stricken Delilah and supplied food and water. Kaylie said she’d put a stick atop the box in case Delilah felt better in the night and wanted to stand on it.

I was amazed and thought, “Wow, Lord, this would be a huge miracle.” The following morning, that miracle happened! Delilah was sitting on the stick, her chest wound fully healed, and her back end completely recovered! God blessed our faith that day. I testify that He enjoys giving good gifts to His children when we approach Him with childlike faith.

Call to Remember

God will carry out what you’ve asked—according to His will. Have a faith-filled day!
