As Told By: David

And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!” Luke 8:24-25

It was a beautiful sunny day in Jamaica. Just the kind of day that calls a person to spend time outdoors. My oldest daughter and I had taken the opportunity to enjoy nature and go swimming in the Alligator Pond area. We were enjoying the refreshing coolness of the water, diving underneath, splashing, swimming, and just having an enjoyable recreational time together.

Suddenly, our relaxing, playful day changed drastically. We were quickly being carried away deeper and deeper in the water. I tried to swim to shore and get out, but my efforts were in vain. It seemed as if I could make no progress. The more I tried, the more I began to realize that we were caught up in a strong current.

My daughter had not realized what was happening. She continued looking at me and smiling and having fun. I tried to conceal my panic by forcing a smile to not alarm her. I knew we were in trouble, and I didn't know how to get us out of danger. I wasn't worried about myself as much as I was worrying for my daughter, who trusted that she was safe with me and kept her eyes on me.

The more I struggled with the current, the further we were being carried out to deeper waters. I cried loudly to Jesus, “LORD help us!” My daughter realized something was wrong for me to have cried out like that in prayer to Jesus. No sooner did I cry to the LORD than my foot touched the bank, and we were free from the current. The LORD had delivered us.

Call to Action

The disciples panicked and turned to Jesus. I panicked and turned to Jesus. Who will you turn to in your difficulties when all hope seems gone?

Indeed we serve a LIVING God that even the winds and waters obey Him. I will keep trusting my life in His hands and pray for an increase of faith in every difficult situation until the end of my days. Will you join me?

I knew I had to forgive this woman, but how? I’d forgiven people in the past, but this seemed above and beyond my capacity. I am not a naturally forgiving person. I have a tendency to cling to grudges like a vice grip, but I knew this would eat me alive. I pleaded with God to...
