Story as told by: Aleta A.
It had been two years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The road to recovery was brutal and demoralizing, to say the least. Now, hoping to recover from the interruption to my nursing career and to get back on track, I took a travel assignment on an Arizona Indian reservation.
The hospital on the reservation was very isolated, far from the nearest city. Getting there required a 60-mile drive along a narrow, two-lane highway that went through desert landscape. Being unfamiliar with the area, I often prayed for protection while driving this road. When I was running late and leaving town after dark, I would call my husband, and we would talk on my way back to the reservation. This helped me stay alert to any road hazards.

One evening on my drive home, we were in the middle of a conversation when I abruptly told my husband, “Let me call you back!” I looked and saw the glare of a car’s headlights racing toward me. I looked again, and this time, my senses revealed that the oncoming vehicle, trying to pass a line of cars, was quickly closing in on me and coming up toward me on my side of the road. With no time to react, there was no escaping a head-on collision. Gripping the steering wheel, I cried, “God help me!” Instantly, as if defying the laws of physics, the oncoming vehicle abruptly moved to my right, passed by me on the narrow dirt shoulder, and was back on the road behind me. I could not believe my eyes! The ordeal was over in a split second, but it had seemed like an eternity. The vehicle was gone as quickly as it had appeared.
After I calmed down and reflected on what had just happened, I called my husband to explain why I had quickly hung up the phone. We both praised God for His goodness and protection on that road that day. “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.” (Psalm 107:6 NIV)
