This General Tso’s tofu recipe is an easy plant-based dinner that is healthier than your classic take-out. The sauce is perfectly balanced with sweet, spicy, tangy and aromatic flavors that coat deliciously crisp tofu.

Serve with rice and broccoli.

General Tso’s Tofu

Ingredients

For the Tofu

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil (or cooking oil of your preference)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons ginger, grated or 1 teaspoon of ginger powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons grated garlic

For the sauce

  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup non-GMO soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar (apple cider vinegar works too)
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce (or chili flakes)
  • 2 tablespoon date or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons juice of a freshly squeezed orange
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • A pinch of salt

To thicken sauce

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu

  1. Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess water.
  2. Cut your tofu into bite-sized cubes.
  3. Add cut tofu to a container or plastic bag along with 2 tablespoons corn starch and toss to coat (shake the bag or place lid on container to shake).
  4. Warm a large pan over medium-high heat and add 2 tablespoons of avocado oil, minced garlic, and ginger.
  5.  Brown the tofu on all sides.
  6. Set aside.

Prepare the Sauce

  • In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients (except cornstarch and water) and heat over high heat.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water until smooth.
  • When the sauce comes to a boil, slowly add in the cornstarch and water mixture while stirring. Bring up to a boil again and turn off heat. The sauce should be thick.
  • Add the browned tofu to the sauce and let it marinate for a few minutes.
  • Serve over white rice and steamed broccoli. Yummy!!!!

Call to Action

Spices provide flavor for bland food, healing for sick bodies, and fragrance for perfumes.

Spices by nature add a special quality to whatever mundane thing they touch or mingle with. As Christians, we can partake of the sweet-smelling spice of Christ’s sacrifice. When we mingle with Christ, we become inseparable from His aroma. And we too become a fragrance to the world — either the sweet fragrance of life or the smell of death and judgment to those who are perishing.

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish.”

2 Corinthians 2:15
